What is the Difference Between Grass-Fed and Grain-Fed Beef?

Grass-fed beef comes from cattle that graze on natural pasture throughout their lives. Grain-fed beef comes from cattle that are moved to feedlots and fed a diet of corn or soy to speed up growth. The difference affects flavour, nutrition, and animal welfare significantly.

At Park Hill Farm in Shropshire, all our beef cattle are 100% grass-fed and pasture-raised from birth to finish — never fed grain or kept in feedlots.

What Does Grass-Fed Actually Mean?

Grass-fed means the cattle eat only grass, hay, and forage throughout their entire lives. They graze freely on natural pasture, which is how cattle evolved to eat.

Grain-fed cattle start on grass but are moved to feedlots where they are fed grain-based diets. This is common in supermarket beef as it produces faster weight gain and lower costs.

How Does It Affect the Taste?

Grass-fed beef has a deeper, more complex flavour. You will often notice a slightly richer, earthier taste compared to grain-fed beef. Many chefs and food lovers consider it superior in flavour.

Grain-fed beef tends to have a milder, more uniform flavour — which is why supermarket beef can taste the same regardless of breed or farm.

Nutritional Differences

Grass-fed beef is higher in:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
  • Vitamins A and E
  • Antioxidants

Grain-fed beef tends to be higher in overall fat content due to the rapid weight gain from a grain diet.

Why Does the Breed Matter Too?

At Park Hill Farm we rear South Devon cattle — one of the oldest native British breeds. South Devon cattle are naturally suited to grazing on grass and produce exceptionally tender, well-marbled beef with outstanding flavour.

The combination of grass-fed diet and the South Devon breed is what makes our beef genuinely different from supermarket alternatives.
